Daily Maintenance and Cleaning Methods for Artificial Turf

Compared to natural grass, artificial turf requires less maintenance, but proper cleaning and care can still help extend its lifespan and keep it looking its best.

Compared to natural grass, artificial turf requires less maintenance, but proper cleaning and care can still help extend its lifespan and keep it looking its best. Understanding basic maintenance methods will ensure your turf performs well over the long term.

I. Basic Cleaning: Keeping the Surface Clean

Daily cleaning is essential for maintaining the appearance of artificial turf:

Removing Debris: Regularly pick up surface debris such as fallen leaves, twigs, and paper scraps to prevent accumulation that could affect appearance and drainage.

Removing Dust: For light dust, rinse with clean water or sweep with a soft-bristled brush; for heavier dust buildup, use a vacuum cleaner or rinse with water.

Spot Stain Treatment: For oil stains, food residue, and similar substances, wipe them promptly with a mild detergent and a damp cloth to prevent stains from seeping into the grass fibers

II. Grass Fiber Brushing: Restoring Upright Position

Prolonged foot traffic and heavy pressure may cause the grass fibers to flatten; regular brushing helps restore them to an upright position:

Brushing Tools: Use a stiff-bristled brush or a dedicated turf aerator, brushing in the natural direction of the grass fibers

Brushing Frequency: Determine based on usage frequency; high-traffic areas should be brushed monthly, while low-traffic areas can be brushed quarterly

Infill Adjustment: For infilled sports turf, brushing helps redistribute the infill particles evenly, maintaining the support of the grass fibers

III. Infill Management: Special Maintenance for Sports Turf

Infilled sports turf requires attention to the condition of the infill:

Infill replenishment: After prolonged use, quartz sand and rubber granules may be lost or settle; replenish as needed to restore the design height

Infill leveling: Use a rake or specialized equipment to spread the infill evenly, avoiding localized buildup or gaps that could affect performance

Infill Replacement: After several years of use, the infill may become compacted or pulverized; it must be completely replaced to restore the turf’s elasticity and cushioning properties.

IV. Drainage System Maintenance: Preventing Water Pooling

Effective drainage is key to keeping artificial turf dry and preventing mold growth:

Drainage Hole Cleaning: Regularly inspect drainage holes along the turf edges or at the base and clear any debris causing blockages.

Inspection of the Permeable Layer: For permeable turf, monitor water accumulation after rain. If drainage is slow, check whether the underlying layer is compacted or blocked.

Edge Sealing: Ensure the turf edges are properly sealed against hard surfaces or edging strips to prevent water from seeping into the underlying layer from the sides.

V. Seasonal Maintenance: Adapting to Different Climatic Conditions

Appropriate measures must be taken to address the impact of seasonal changes on the turf:

Summer Maintenance: During hot weather, water the lawn appropriately to lower temperatures and prevent the grass fibers from softening and deforming due to excessive heat.

Winter Maintenance: In snowy regions, promptly remove snow to prevent compaction that could cause the grass fibers to flatten; if de-icing is necessary, avoid using sharp tools that could damage the grass fibers.

Fall Season: Increase the frequency of leaf cleanup to prevent leaf buildup, fermentation, and contamination of the grass fibers.

VI. Regular Inspections: Address Issues Promptly

Regular inspections help identify and address potential problems early:

Seam Inspection: Check the seams where turf panels meet for delamination or curling, and repair them promptly to prevent further damage

Edge Securing: Check that the turf edges are securely fastened; if any are loose, re-secure them immediately.

Damage Repair: For localized scorching, scratches, or wear, cut a patch of turf of the same color to repair the affected area.

Although the maintenance of artificial turf is not complicated, regular cleaning and care will ensure that the turf retains its attractive appearance and performance even after many years of use.
